What are the requirements to become a driving instructor?

The DVSA (Driving & Vehicle Standards Agency) has requirements that anyone looking to train to become a driving instructor must fulfill.

You must be aged 21 or over
Have held a driving licence for at least three years
Complete and pass an enhanced criminal record and motoring conviction check

Is it worth training to be a driving instructor?

Currently, there is a massive backlog of people wanting to learn to drive, with people enquiring about lessons every day. You have job security and complete control of your diary and can be as busy as you want to be.

How long does it take to train as a driving instructor?

How long it takes to complete your ADI driving instructor training course really depends on how much time you can put into it. On average, students finish within six to nine months, but it could be much sooner or later depending on your availability, DBS approval, and DVSA test date availability.

How do I pay for my ADI training course?

Do driving instructors make good money?

Earning potential depends on the amount of hours that you choose to work. Few jobs offer the same flexibility and earnings potential.

ABOUT ADI DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

There are three Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) tests that you need to pass to qualify as an approved driving instructor (ADI).

Part 1 Theory & Hazard Perception

100 multiple-choice theory questions. Then 15 minutes to watch 14 hazard perception videos, spotting developing hazards as they appear.

Part 2 Driving Ability

The second test is an advanced practical driving test, which is conducted by a DVSA examiner. You’ll demonstrate your expert-level driving skills and detailed knowledge of The Highway Code learned during training.

Part 3 Instructional Ability

In part 3 test, you give a real client-centred 1-hour driving lesson, testing you on three categories – lesson planning, risk management, and teaching & learning strategies. The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the required standards.

Our driving instructor training course includes study materials that cover all the Driving Standards Agency tests – Parts 1, 2, and 3. You’ll also have in-car and classroom training sessions that are customised for each test as you go through the course.
