How do I become a driving instructor?

To become a driving instructor, you need to pass the DVSA ADI qualifying tests: Part 1 theory, Part 2 driving ability and Part 3 instructional ability. Geoff Capes Driving Instructor Training can support you through each stage of the process.

What are the ADI Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 tests?

ADI Part 1 is the theory and hazard perception test, Part 2 assesses your driving ability, and Part 3 assesses your instructional ability. You need to pass all three parts to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor.

What are the requirements to becoming a driving instructor?

  • You must be aged 21 or over
  • Have held a driving licence for at least three years
  • Complete and pass an enhanced criminal record and motoring conviction check
  • Have a passion to teach
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Enjoy driving

Can I train around my current job or commitments?

Yes, we can arrange your training around your work or family commitments. Many trainee driving instructors complete their ADI training while working full-time, with training arranged around their availability.

How long does it take to train?

This really depends on the amount of time you can commit to your training. As a guide, you can expect to complete your course within six to nine months, however this can vary depending on the time you have to commit, your DBS approval and the availability of DVSA test dates.

Do I have to join your driving school when I am qualified?

No, we would love to welcome you to our team, but we are happy to provide instructor training for those wishing to start their own business. If you do decide to join our team, we provide full back office support, new students and the flexibility to choose when you work as well as ongoing support and training.

How much does it cost?

How many hours do I have to work as a driving instructor?

Being a driving instructor is extremely flexible to your lifestyle, you can work the hours you choose, so you can if you wish work part time to fit around your other commitments.

Do you offer ADI Part 3 rescue training?

Yes. Geoff Capes Driving Instructor Training offers ADI Part 3 rescue training for trainee instructors who need extra support before retaking their instructional ability test.

Do you provide Standards Check training?

Yes. Standards Check training is available for qualified driving instructors who want support preparing for their DVSA Standards Check.
